Old Mill Revisited

Close ups

LinkOil on 5x7 canvas panel.

This is my contribution to this week's The Rectangle Challenge posted by Mary Douglas.

The challenge was to build up your painting through a series of rectangles. A great way to simplify.
I inadvertently didn't follow the instructions to the letter. I wasn't aware of this until I went back and rechecked the instructions after I completed this submission.

This is a redo of the Old Mill Challenge of June 25.
I really enjoyed this very freeing exercise! Thank you, Mary!

Focus-Cougar

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess was Gail, and she provided great photos to work from

I chose this cougar because of his apparent concentration on something...possibly lunch.
"Concentration" made me think of "focus".... Which led to the title and the goal of this painting.
I tried to keep the majority of the painting soft edged and open to interpretation. The focus, or emphasis, is very selective and limited in area.
I think I was sorta successful with this one...anyhow, it was fun!

Lucky Bug-Cricket

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's "The Superstition Challenge" posted by Gwen Duda.
We were challenged to do a painting based on a superstition.
A cricket in the house is supposed to be good luck. Here, boy....I need all the luck I can get!
I love to hear their song.

The Frosted Flakes Guy-Tiger

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The host was Mike, and he provided great photos to work from. In fact, the tiger reference really looked Grrrreat to me.

I set myself the goal to push the color this week for a more expressive painting. I feel this one is more in line to how I painted a few years back. It was really enjoyable!

Better With Age-Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's "The Happy Birthday Carol Challenge"! Posted by her hubby, David Marine.
Happy birthday, Carol! Thanks for being such a huge source of inspiration to so many!
The older the violin, the sweeter the music. The older the wine the better the taste. Thanks for another great year of sharing.

Morning Glory-Rooster

Close ups

Oil on a 6x6 canvas panel.
Working within the square format was something different for me.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess, Kay, provided great photos to work from.

For the thick strokes, I loosely mixed paint (not over mixed) on the palette. Then I would pick it up on my palette knife. Then pick paint up from the knife with a scoop of the brush. And lastly, apply it in one stroke. This seemed to give some nice unexpected blends and broken color.

Eye Opener

Close ups

Acrylic on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's Paint Your Mug Challenge . The challenge was issued by the very accomplished artist, Karla Uphoff .
Karla said: Paint the favorite cup or mug you reach for when you want something hot to drink. I think what we drink out of tells a lot about our personalities.

Black coffee in my black cup is my eye opener. My constant studio companion.

This is acrylics applied in many thin layers, like a watercolor. I did a lot of negative painting around the brushes. It didn't come off as I envisioned it, but hey, I'm still investigating this technique.

Tough Guy- Iguana

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The hostess, Astrid, provided the photos.

The iguana (spiny iguana, I believe) looks like a tough customer from it's facial expression. I just invented the background to sorta reflect his personality.
He's not really sitting on a BBQ grill...Lol!

Light Show-Still Life

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Black & White to Color Challenge . The challenge was issued by the very accomplished artist, Belinda Del Pesco .
The challenge was to paint a color version of a black and white image she posted - in any color harmonies you'd like, but keep the values accurate.
A very useful and educational exercise!

I had fun exploring color combinations and observing all the stunts the light played in the photo!
It was reflecting, refracting, and blurring by the aerial perspective. Thus my title: "Light Show".
